Not being a Chinese literate user, 'troublesome' is the only word that I keep uttering for this whole week.
Before I came to China, I usually chatted with my sister and she would complain to me of how everything seems so confusing in Chinese. Sometimes I tried to give her a step-to-step instruction, but then I promised her that I'll try to fix the thing if I went there. The first thing I did when I was getting hold of her laptop was trying to check the internet connection. As I planned to format the computer, at least I must know how to set the internet back, right? So there I go trying to check and re-setup the internet connection.
Seeing all these squares and I was totally freak out.I was not an expert in setting up connection; all I ever setup is my own internet connection in NTU, which is simply plug-and-play. I gave a try in this connection though... and it turned out to be totally a mess. Finally, I concluded that it was really beyond my ability to setup something by guessing. Then, I decided to format the computer first, hoping that I can change the language to English and then I can do a more efficient trial-and-error setup.
So there I go formatting the computer. I just know that there is this thing call recovery CD in laptop (alright, I never had laptop) which has this genuine windows inside (alright, I never had genuine CD :p) and all I need to do is reboot, click esc, and let everything run by itself.
In the middle of the installation, I realized that it was so automated that it didn't even gave me the chance to choose language. Further inspection shown that Windows DIDN'T allow us to choose language other than what we have paid for. If you want it to support multiple languages, you need to buy the one with multiple language pack, which will cost different price~
After 2 hours of blind installation, I arrived at newly formatted windows. All was totally in Chinese Traditional. And now I can't update anything for my sister because it's not connected to internet. And since it wasn't connected to internet, I can't check any website regarding internet setup as well. Yeah, I'm super clever T_T
I told my sister about the thing… and lucky that she didn't get mad at me. She said that she would call the internet service provider later and make appointment with them to check her computer. I, being a bit relieved, give another try on the connection setup... and out of the blue, it succeeds!! Yupppiie~ I manage to connect to dunno what internet connection using dunno what language. Muahahaa... (proud of my fool self)
Then, I tried to open and download windows live messenger for my sister.
It said that it required at least windows service pack 2 to run.
Then I tried to download windows service pack 2 for windows.
It said that it required other updates before I can download it.
Then I opened Microsoft website and download other updates.
Since I can choose language this time, I choose English and make sure that I download the right thing. When I finished downloading and try to install the thing…
It said that the thing downloaded is in different language with the current windows and is not compatible!!!
I almost exploded T_T
I decided to leave the computer for 3 days to get my temper down and give another try. I managed to download most of the update and left with the windows service pack 2. It keeps disconnected throughout the download section (and I can only use Internet Explorer to download. It complained when I use mozzila, and no, the automatic update didn't download it for me although I have turned it on)
Maybe I will take another 3 days break to get the things done. Hopefully that the new windows live messenger didn't require me to have service pack 3... T_T
Alright.. that roughly summarized my language barrier experience here. Haha.. Being here make me understand how important a language is.
Oh yes, I also have some 'troublesome' internet experience.
Open Microsoft update page and automatically reaching this lovely squared language
Open skype.com and arrive at non English page (again) Now I know why my instruction to dear sister can hardly synchronize.
And look! I can open blogger.com!
But not blogspot.com.And since all the comments are kept in blogspot, I am sorry that I can't reply any of the comment. I'm safe and fat here. Thanks a lot everyone :') I watched about the earthquake also... and felt sorry about it T_T
Alright, next post must be a real travel post!
Eat, Sleep, Play.
