A (Repetitive) Reflection

“To lower to risk of regretting, I finally go with the flow (a.k.a have no self point of view =.=) and pick those most registered subject: Data Mining and Distributed System. Another one that I really looking forward is the Information Retrieval on Thursday..”

I can’t believe this is what I wrote 3 months ago. What on earth make me pick Information Retrieval without even a slightest doubt?

On the other hand, Distributed System, which is the subject I doubt the most of taking, turned out to be the subject that I enjoyed the most this semester… The lecturer is great =) (I mean his method of teaching, of course) Although I have been very scared with the network programming assignment, my teammates are really those I can count on :p haha.. And again, similar to the Cryptography case, this is the course with project cleared first. (Although I haven't touched any of the tutorial)

And again, similar to Neural Network case, I’m now dying with Information Retrieval… Sigghh… Now I understand why war is never ended… People just keep repeating the same mistake and take a long time to learn =_=

In high pressure,

Blog skin updated!

Welcome to the blog version 3.0 :)

After almost 2 years (or more?) with the same blog skin, the desire to update the blog skin came to my mind for several times. Top up with the fact that my blog skin was a classic skin that didn’t support widget, the urge become even stronger.

This blog version 3.0 support the blog widgets, which are those appear at the right side of this blog. The arrangements are taken care by the blogger API… cool, isn’t it? :p

This blog skin 3.0 has come a long way.. I started to look for template at 1am. As usual, I started off with a high expectation of getting a great great blog template somewhere… but I got disappointed not really getting what I want… Most of the great skins are either didn’t supporting blogger widget or created for wordpress T_T I finally get one skin that I almost take but decided to leave it because it’s too hard to modify. In the end, I decided to use blogger default template (Douglas Bowman, Rounders 2) and do minimal editing to the skin… and this is what I got :)

The maron color is chosen… because I am wearing the SU’s maron tshirt right now XD hahahaa… Well, that was part of the reason. The other was because I don’t want to use back the blue color… and I don’t want dark color either… :p where as, the Sakura character from Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle is featured because of the strong connectivity with the blog purpose: memories conservation. Hahahaaa… For those who haven’t watched the anime, the feather that Sakura is holding represents her memories :) If hers are saved in feather, mine is saved in this blog. I also just finished watching the third part of the movie, which was exceptionally great… leaving me with no doubt to pick this image and put it in the blog :p

Honestly, I like my previous blog skin a lot. That was the first blog skin that I edited so much (from the default of Habour, also from Douglas Bowman) and felt satisfied with. Thanks Sailormoon for accompanying me in these 2 years… You’re always the greatest manga in my heart :D For now, let’s welcome Sakura as the new representative of my blog. Haha…

One last look to the blog v2.0

Welcome, blog version 3.0!

Oh btw, this new skin also serves as a gift from me to my blog for my upcoming 21st Birthday.(huh? @.@) Hahaha.. It has been quite long that I didn’t touch CSS.. And I enjoyed the making process, really =D compared with the previous one, it is quite painless this time :p

With this new template, I will now be able to update my blog list easier :D Will put more updates from time to time. I was thinking of using tab in the blog as well... but so far haven't really seen the need... so leave it for future work~

Ok, 6am in the morning now.. Shall sleep now and see what time will I wake up… T_T

Happy Easter Day!

Just another week with assignments...

This week is officially started with FYP Report deadline. I just started to look at it again in early Monday morning (1:00 AM). I slept at 2++, and woke up at 7.30 AM to go to library and print the report. As expected, I didn’t get it right in the first attempt… I went through the typical suffering in getting the report done… wrong pages printed, wrong report binding, long queue, cashcard failure, top-up failure... The whole set. Nevertheless, I managed to complete and submit them at 2.30.

*Knocked Examiner door*
Him: "Come in"

Me: "Erm, I'm here to.. Errm.."
Him: "Yes?"
Me: "Erm, this report.. Errm.."
Him: Oh, I'm your examiner"
Me: "Oh, yes yes yes"
Him: "Oh, Ok."
*Take, throw the report to table, and continue his work at computer*

***

I don't understand why I was so nervous :s I didn't even introduce myself.. =.='' maybe it's because i never expect him to be in his office.. because 15 minutes ago, he wasn't around yet.. haha.. anyway, I never expected only such a short conversation with him... knowing that he was a quite friendly lecturer last time.. T_T

Afterwards… my days continued as usual.. days through assignments and discussion. My Monday is for ADMT, Tuesday for DS, and Wednesday for IR. The cycle repeated for the whole week. All the assignments this semester have been quite challenging (with additional 5 stars for IR). Honestly, I enjoyed them quite a lot. After almost 2 years of vacuum in Java programming, this semester; to the contrast; all the assignments are in Java! I seem to appreciate the language more now. Thanks to DS, I finally learn about exception handling. Thanks to IR, I finally learn about IO and memory issues. And Thanks to Helios, I finally learnt to use Eclipse. Yay! (But seems like system.out.println is still my favorite debugging tool). Hahaha…

Anyway, I can’t believe that I really haven’t touched java for almost 2 years! The last time I used it was in year 2 sem 1, perhaps? Afterwards, I started to learn funny stuff like sql, prolog, scheme, c#, php etc etc.. I don’t even have java JDK installed in my computer when this final semester starts! (and I call myself a computer science student =.=’)

This week, I’m in the peak of my saturation. Even the free pizza and ice cream from SCE didn't manage to make me feel better... I am so saturateeddd... I can even feel it in my way of typing blog… seems like no spirit at all… =.=’’ I can’t remember when is the last time I went out from NTU... one month ago? Oh no.. I really need to go out and have a KF… ee.., I mean, a break…

Anyone?

Saturated,

The Color of Love

I was lonely...
I needed someone to see me through

I was at the end of my rope...
I needed someone to cut me loose

And then an angel out of the blue
Gave me the sense that i might make it through
And somehow I survived with no rhyme or reason
And now I know I'll make it through the miracle of you

I know the color of love
And it lives inside of you

I know the color of truth
It's in the image of you

If it comes from the heart
Then you know that it's true
It will color your soul like a rainbow

And the color of love... is in you...

Boyz II Men - The Color of Love

I love this song since high school, but this is the first time I pay extra attention to the lyric. (I seem to pay extra attention to a lot of things now.. you know, when the other thing you should actually be focusing on is your stack of assignment T_T)

I particularly love the first one and half minute of the lyric... Have been repeating it over and over again... Gosh, I don’t know why I like 90's songs so much... they seemed to show appreciation towards life, much more than the current hits song. Where are all those poetic and romantic singers now? T_T

... And the color of love, is in you...

Another Rainy Day...

I got another unusual dream today… about a family in wizarding world. The only daughter of a minister has a mysterious death… and when checking her room, her wardrobe couldn’t be opened, no matter what magic was performed to it. Finally, it’s me (of course lar, my dream :p) who helped to unlock the wardrobe… it was full of the daughter feeling.. and hence to open the wardrobe, we need to understand her feeling.. after let it listen to her favorite childhood music box (which was a gift from her parents), the wardrobe unlocked.

Everything inside was usual.. but then, we found a note from her daughter… which stated the cause of her death.. the weird thing is.. the note is written in… er.. programming language (I think I code too much in these few days) T_T this is how the note goes:

Public static void main(Rune [] args){
Rune message = “Dear Mum and Dad,”;
Message += “By the time you read this, I might have left the wizarding world. I have an acute illness, which I discovered several years ago. I attempted to tell mum and dad, but both of you seems very busy. I understand about your jobs and responsibility, and hence I kept it to myself until the end of my life. I have no revenge towards mum and dad. I hope that I have been a good daughter till the end.”;

System.out.println(message);
For(int I = 0; I < Infinity; I++){
System.out.println("I love you, mum and dad. Always");
}
}

The flow of the dream was quite touching.. but I can’t remember most of the story as I didn’t write it down right after I woke up… Thanks to the dream, I woke up 30 minutes late from schedule and almost late for an interview at SSC.

The interview was called University Scholars Award… I am not a scholar… and I was quite blur of what it is about. The explanation stated that I was given the privilege to choose one teacher and one professor to be given a teaching excellence award. So, I assumed that the interview will be asking of how the respective personal has contribute to my life.. I prepare a long long answer of how they inspired me, but the question didn’t turn out at all T_T

Instead, a group of 10 people asked about my ECA, study, etc etc... I was also asked of what is my opinion of current NTU advertisement… Oh well, I was totally unprepared for the interview.. and so… the 15 minutes interview ended with a long silent of 10 minutes. I wish my friends all the best for their part. =)

Back from the interview, it was raining very hard… I reached back hostel all wet (although I got an umbrella) I checked my mail box and spotted a gift from bank B... token of appreciation for participating in their technology challenge. Haha.. not bad :p

Ok… 2.30 now.. shall go for my 6 hours lesson… wish everyone a good rainy day!

Sleepy sleepy~

Photoshop – How far can it go?

I have always heard that Photoshop is powerful. I saw quite a lot of ‘before and after’ results of Photoshop. I like them, but I believed those images must have been purposely taken in such a way that it can be ‘fixed’ by Photoshop, and not all natural. I do not believe that it’s possible to fix all photos, not until I tried it on my own.

After watching a tutorial from Xiaxue (click the link at your own risk, k :p) I was quite amazed to find out one of her secrets of Photoshop.. A filter called liquify. To proof the power, I decided to make an experiment. Since I don’t want to be sued because of photo abuse, I choose myself as the victim of my experiment.

This is the picture I choose.

Original picture before any editing

I applied the basic contrast adjustment to the photo:

After brightness and contrast Adjustment

Look better after lighting? Can see the usual me? The Smiling Buddha? Good.

What? Narcissism? Of course. You dont have to be pretty to be narcist. haha...

Before you scroll down, let me warn you that the photo is my FIRST experiment... I tell you that it makes the picture looked really different, but it can either be in positive or negative way.

Please do not scroll if you’re eating.

Here comes the liquify in action~

After 15 minutes liquify filtering

I believe you will scroll up and compare again. Hahaha… I felt like being transformed from a bakpao face to an alien face…. Hahaha XD… What I did was basically shrinking my face and my brain size (:p) as well as making my eyes larger.

I don’t know how different it is in your view, but I didn’t see any similarity with my face! I almost can’t believe that it’s still the same picture, with such a different object O.o

Add some simple background, now it looks likes the picture coming out from those Japanese photo machines. Haha!

After background editing

Well, now... After this whole editing, I can’t believe that I made fun of my own face for the sake of curiousity =.=' haha.. Is the 'after' look better than 'before? No matter what is your answer, I will feel happy =D because it's either i'm a good photoshopper or i'm naturally good looking even without photoshop XD (Ok, I have warned you not to scroll if you're still eating)

PS: I still love my own face the most =]

Side Wishes

Most likely, you have some wishes that you know will never happen, and yet it kept coming to your mind over and over again, in different time and places.

I made wishes several times for these things to happen:
- That food doesn’t cause fat. Study does
- That I can transfer fat to those needy people, simply by pulling it out from stomach
- That my primary food is not rice, but KFC

These wishes aren’t something that you think about seriously… and not something that you might wish for when u’re given a chance to make only 1 dream come true. They just come impulsively to your mind… and it somehow reflects what kind of person you are.

What is your spontaneous wishes right now? =D

Coffee Experiment

For this past three years, I drink a cup of coffee, almost everyday. I might skip my breakfast or lunch, but I never skipped coffee. My health conscious friends said that I’m addicted, and urged me to try reducing the coffee intake slowly, before I got the undesirable health problem, with yellow teeth as a bonus.

So, now, as my coffee supply is going low, I started to follow their advices. I spent 3 days without coffee.

The result was disastrous.

First day without coffee, I wasn’t sleepy, but I’m lack of concentration. End up, the task that I supposed to finish in half hour, dragged until 5 hours. As I have a tight schedule, I have no choice but to do the stuff until 3 am.

Second day without coffee, I woke up at 12pm. And again, the same thing happen: not be able to concentrate in day time, but feeling all awake at night. I work until 4 am to get my stuff done.

Third day without coffee, I started to get pimple. I slept at 5 am that day.

Fourth day, I quit trying to give up coffee.

I realized that I have really been addicted to coffee. It didn’t mean that I can’t live without it, but it has played a part in giving me a normal life. With a cup of it every morning, I feel energized and concentrated on what I do throughout the day. At night, the coffee effect ran out just when I want to rest, so that I can have a good and peaceful sleep.

The experiment might be biased due to the busy load that I was having at that time… but for several month ahead, I might not want to try another funny experiment. Haha… Previously, I always thought that there is no harm in drinking coffee... but now, I really don’t know whether it’s right or not for me to have it everyday... Thanks to all my friends who make me feel more and more guilty as time passed. T_T

Exclaim 7 - The Aftermath

The most awaited of the year is finally here. SCE School Day – Exclaim 7! As I mentioned in my previous post, I was fully ON for this event.

Knowing this is my last year joining, I decided to enjoy it to the fullest. That’s why, upon receiving information regarding Amazing Race, I applied without hesitance. But joining alone will not be as fun as going along with friends; hence I decided to persuade others to join as well.

This was what I posted in our yahoo group to persuade:

-----
Hi, anyone wanna join Amazing Race? We got the winning probability of 90%. Below are the derivations:
1st year students are still green and dont know about SCE ---> Wont be able to answer the questions correctly
2nd year students are busy with their DDP ---> Wont be able to join
3rd year students are on IA ---> Completely eliminated
4th year students are feeling too old ---> This is where we'll stand out!

In conclusion, 90% of them wont be participating... and we got higher chance of winning. So, Amazing Race anyone?
-----

In the end, there are 3 team from SCE Year 2004 (yeah, I know, 2004 means that we’re the oldest, but our spirits are exceptionally young :p) contained of 4 CSC-ians and 2 CE-ians. I myself partnered with Tjoa.

The race was at 11.30 am. On the event day itself, I slept only at 5am.. =.= (my sleeping time is really bad this week). I woke up at 10.30, with a very big temptation to sleep again until afternoon and forgot about the whole event. However, in my sleepy mind, I remember about buffet… which made up the motivation to wake up, shower, and run to Nanyang Auditorium.

The race started at 11.50. We needed to visit 3 places: Research Techno, Forensic Lab, and Parallel Distributed Computing Center. There, we were required to solve 7 questions + 1 challenge from the post master. First challenge was to draw an Exclaim logo. Second and Third were to do a typical orientation-type games.. which make me feel dejavu. I enjoyed the challenges quite a lot.. but the 7 questions really gave headaches T_T (A** and A***, thx for help! :p) We finished it in one hour plus.. which was truly late compared to the average submission of 40 minutes.

We finished the race just nice before the grand opening… the opening lasted for around half hour… My FYP supervisor get the award as the best lecturer for year 4!! I can’t believe it. Haha.. Congratz, Prof! Year 1 best lecturer was WWK, our second part lecturer for Cryptography.. yeah… he was good. Year 2 was someone I don’t know.. and Year 3 was Prof Miao! My lecturer for Soft Eng 2. haha…

After the opening, here come the most awaited time.. lunch! The food was overflown~~ I had a great lunch =D Afterwards, I continued with watching some performances, chatted with friends, as well as playing some games. I stayed there until 4.30, without even having the desire to walk out at all. You can tell that they really have done a good job ^^

12 rows of food! : : All for SCE-ians!

At 4 pm, the lucky draw started.. Despite the huge number of prizes, I didn’t get anything. But I, unexpectedly, win, the, amazing, race. First.place.some.more. I really never expected it!! I walked out from auditorium with a Creative Zen! Muahahaa… I was so happy… What make me happier was, the 3 winning teams are all FINAL YEAR friends… hahahaa… Does it mean that experiences outweighed everything? Muahaha… I kept smiling for the rest of the day. ^^;

Ok ba.. I felt sleepy now.. shall end my blog with a picture of what I get in this exclaim. Oh, btw, the Nanyang Auditorium was decorated with 600 of roses.. It was pretty… and creative =D Special thanks to all the Exclaim committee this year! You made my last Exclaim the most memorable one ^^ I felt so contended :)

I'm really inlove with the design.. *sigh

Now, as clock ticks to 9:20 pm.. I needed to back to reality and faced the stack of assigments.

Tuesday Morning

4th March, 2.34 am... (4-3-2-3-4) I clicked the Send Button. I remembered again what she told me during my demo yesterday "FYP Report is veeerryy important, make sure you put your best in it. It's the most efficient, and perhaps the only way for your examiner to know much enough about you and your project..."

This statement, more or less, defined how important the report is for my supervisor. And I can't say I have put my best in it.. I barely have energy to read through it again after being written. Thanks Ari to do it for me :)

The report will determine my future... I can suddenly feel the pressure now... :S

NTU Undergraduate Admissions 2008

I think my English is getting worse and worse. Look at the image below.

Don't click on the image, it wont bring you anywhere :p

The image is taken from NTU website banner on 2nd of March 08.

I can't figure out why it's using article 'an' instead of 'a' in the 'NTU degree'... Upon searching, I spotted that NUS is also using 'an NUS...' Why? is it because the 'N' read as 'en', so it's considered vowel? I never know about it before! @.@

Anybody cares to explain this English 101?

Recess Week Report

This entry is posted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the weekly blog.

Objective
The main purpose of this entry is to release some stress due to FYP. This entry will cover random topics including FYP report, triple room sharing, and daily activities. The topics are organized in a chronological form.

Background
Recess week has never been so terrifying before. With FYP report to be submitted by early March, the student has no choice but to dip her head to report writing every day. Additional pressure was created from triple assignments that need to be completed in one month time. The assignments came from the three final PE subjects that the student took for her final semester.

Resources
A 3 years old computer that hangs occasionally and shows a virtual memory low warning.

Progress of report in a week
Monday: Student was notified that she won a $10 Gelare voucher, which was to be collected on 12pm – 1pm. Hence, the student started the day mugging in library such that she wont miss the collection time. Upon doing her report in library, student realized that she needed to take references from books, which she left nicely in her room. In the end, student spent most of the time playing fluff friends at library level 2.

Tuesday: Student attended Pre-graduation seminar at 10.30 in ADM building. Despite being scheduled to finish at 12.30, the event dragged until 1.30. After a sumptuous lunch, student rush to lab to give a demo to supervisor. However, the demo was cancelled by supervisor due to the unforeseen circumstances. Demo is to be rescheduled in the following week. Student felt disappointed and relieved at the same time, as she hasn’t really prepared yet for the demo. After the rush, student went to Nanyang Market to buy some fruits. Time showed 3pm when she actually started to open up her report.

Wednesday: Student wake up at 10 am and decided to do report at hostel room. The student carelessly forgot her daily coffee dosage, causing the lack of concentration and minimum result.

Thursday: Student went to library at 1pm. After typing report until 5.30, student went to have a great steamboat at can A. Student wanted to extend her thanks to It Land, who has been preparing for the food and utensils. Student had a great time until 8 pm. Reaching back room, student took 4 hours to start focusing on report. Student shutdown the computer only after it hanged and went to sleep at 4.30 am. Student suspected that leap day isn’t a good day for her.

Friday, the leap day: Student woke up at 11.30 and not in her best condition. After lunch, student notice an email about triple room sharing showrooms. Being a good resident, student decided to go and voiced out her opinion. Observation showed that the room isn’t really fit for 3 people. Despite the 3 people, the fan was changed to a smaller fan to avoid risking people sleeping at the upper bed. That will increase the temperature by another 50%, after the 50% increase due to the 3 people sharing O2. Figure 1 and Figure 2 below showed the triple sharing room of hall 13, while figure 3 and figure 4 depicted the triple sharing room of hall 14.

Figure 1: Hall 13 Triple Sharing Room - Right

Figure 2: Hall 13 Triple Sharing Room - Left

Figure 3: Hall 14 Triple Sharing Room - Right

Figure 4: Hall 14 Triple Sharing Room - Left

Student suddenly felt happy for being a final year student.

During viewing, one person said hi to the student. However, student totally had no idea where she had met the pretty girl. Student just stared blankly, and the pretty girl said to her friend “I’m Agnes friend, but I think she didn’t remember me. Long time already, since FOA” Student felt so ashamed but didn’t do anything.. and pretended to examine the room. Back from the viewing, student felt dizzy and hence decided to take a nap. Student suspects that it was due to too much mugging and has been rarely exposed to either sunlight or sport. Student wanted to extend her sorry to one of her friend, who she left when he needed help.

After nap, student continued with the report. Student felt happy when she was informed by fluff friends that she won special prize. However, student regretted selling the prize at the low rate. The price increases to 2 folds on the next day. At the same day, student reached the stage 3 of scratch and win. Student regretted selling Russell doll as well, which is a win-only price. Based from this experience, student would learn not to act on sudden impulse again. Student slept at 3am, after crashing the lab’s computer.

Saturday: Student wake up at 9 to go to toilet, and continued sleeping until 10.30. After shower, student started to type blog. Stopped at 11.30 for lunch, then continued until now. Time is showing 1 pm of the new month, and student has no mood to start anything.

Problem and solutions
The report development poses several challenges as follow:
- The low motivation. Being ridiculously unfamiliar with the experiment done this year, student got a great pressure in finding the right term to describe something.
- The high temptation. Upon searching on the right term, student will spent 5% of the time finding an answer in internet, 5% feeling frustrated, and 90% playing facebook and reading blog.

Conclusion and future works
Whoever said that FYP report can be done in 2 weeks, didn’t take into account the brain of normal people. Based from the experiment, student realized that 1 month was the shortest time to finish a report, assuming that the report started from scratch. For any future works, student urges people to always keep a simple logbook of what have been done throughout the year. It will help a lot in the report writing process.

Student wish everyone, including herself, all the best in report struggling.

The student,
