Oh I love the run, I really do! I never know that I will be enjoying it so much. Lets start from the beginning.

Saturday
5pm – decided to take a nap in anticipation for the night race. Felt quite anxious that I couldn’t really switch off my mind for the first half an hour
8pm – woke up and quite surprise to see it’s already 8pm! Went out for dinner at Koufu. Had one glass of ice coffee. The drink stall auntie asked me to repeat my order 3 times, confirming that I’m taking coffee. Maybe coffee at 8pm is not a very common order.
9.30pm – started the journey from home, with blessing from the whole flatamates (thanks all, you’re the best! :)) Fi’s Mum advised me to take jacket, as the night wind is not good for health. It hits me as a very good advice… but I simply don’t have any good jacket… so I decided to go without one.
10.00pm – reached the Nicole Highway Station. Saw a lot of runners, which surprisingly, mostly ladies? I saw sea of runners as I tapped out from MRT. The Station was making announcement “Attention Please, the station is crowded. If you’re not taking the train, please leave the station now. Thank you”. Hahaha… First time hearing this kind of announcement
10.15pm – took the escalator up from the MRT, and it was already the Sundown Marathon Race Village. The network reception was really horrible. There was no signal for most of the time. I can’t really find anyone I know of, so I just wandered around the place.

10.30pm – got the chance to witness the flag off for 10 KM runners near the start point. The MC was there, but didn’t sound as excited as the one doing the Standard Chartered marathon. Maybe this passed his sleeping time already =p It was quite dark every where, and my iPhone 3GS is really pushed to the limit as I tried to capture some pics.

11.00pm – walked around the Race village hunting for free food. I managed to find free Popcorn and candy floss, and $1 ice cream which is free upon showing them your Facebook’s check-in in Sundown Marathon 2012 (that explained my check in! :p)

11.30pm – saw the opening of FREE Photo Booth and decided to take some better quality picture :D :D Happy to get the hardcopy of the picture, but then realized that I didn’t have any bag to put it. No way I’m going to hold it through out the race. Thanks to the ice coffee I had earlier, my brain hasn’t fully asleep yet. I pinned the picture along with my race bib, to my shirt. Not I don’t have to carry it along - felt genius of doing that =p

| The Hardcopy... totally can't make it through the rain v_v Digital rocks! |
11.45pm – had my last round of toilet break and started to get into the race area. They split the area according to the target finish time. Being realistic, I entered the area of 21 KM – above 3 hrs” section. Turned out that it means I have to wait for second wave, which start like 20 mins after the first wave. I have no issue waiting, but then I remember about my $5 shuttle bus, which will depart at 4am. I requested the security to allow me pass internally to the first wave race field, which he rejected furiously for some safety reason. In the end, I have to walk out from the race field, take a big round at the race village, and then entered the first wave section.
12.00am – it started to get quite packed at the race field. I didn’t have lots to do, so I started to play Surviving High School. While playing, I could feel that there are quite a few runners walk passed me, trying to slip their way to the front row.

12.30am – I finished my game, and the run started! I checked my mobile and realized that I only have…. 30% of battery remaining. Seriously? It was fully charged before I left home! and I have been turning off the 3G for a while. There is no way I can play my songs throughout the run, left along tracking it via Run Keeper. I decided to keep my headset to my pocket and just wished that I would be able to survive without any music.
 |
| At the starting point! There was some machine helicopter carrying camera flying in the sky too |
12.45am – finally I started running! It was really crowded as both the half marathon and full marathon runner combined together, but enough for me to run at my comfortable speed. To my surprise, running without music actually felt good. I like the runners’ consistent step sounds – helped me to pace myself better. We passed through Geylang in the first 5km =p
01.50am – With no Run Keeper telling me the time and km, I just kept running (or more precisely – Jog) my way and stopped for few seconds at the hydration points (I can’t stand skipping free stuff). This kind of welfare is definitely better than my gym treadmill training! No one served me drink every 2km in gym =p 100 plus tasted really good, and I just felt more energized than ever. Without me even realizing it, I passed through the 10km, right in front of the Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands. They were people at the bar cheering us up as well. So touchy!

02.30am – Another 5km, and it was time for the split between half and full marathon. Few of the location were really dark and kind of bumpy. There is no way to run fast while still maintain the safety factor. There are also few locations where the crew directed us to grass field. How on earth is muddy grass field a official run path? Anyway, I was doing ok. I recall there should be a banana point somewhere near the last 7km, so was just keeping myself alert not to miss anything =p
 |
| Time to say goodbye to the 42KM runner - long way to go, buddy! :p |
03.00am – got my banana, got into my last Hydration point, and was told that it’s 1.5km to go. Funnily enough, there was a piece of me inside saying that I didn’t want this to end so soon. It has been a really great run so far. I enjoyed the night run just like how I thought about it – chilling without the hot burning sun waiting for you in the middle of the run. And I think the night run means the body is in its sleeping mode, so it helped me to relax.

03.05am – There has been thunder and lighting through out the run, but I was quite confident that the organizer must have made some secret arrangement to ensure that it wont rain. Well, I was wrong. Starting at 3am, it started to drizzle. The first thing I worry about is… my iPhone. The run can cost me my sneakers, but not my phone please! I made a quick stop at the bus halter and turn my iPhone off, and then trying my best to cover the phone with whatever I have.
03.15am – The last km was a run at a bridge. It was madness! The rain was pouring so hard. First my sight was kind of obscured by the rain, then I felt my shoes and socks soaked, then I literally even bother trying to stay dry anymore. I just run the last kilometer looking at the street to ensure I wont cause a scene by slipped through my last few meters.
03.20am – finished the race! Feel good! Alas no picture =(
 |
| My Timing - 02:41hrs for 21 KM :D |
04.00am – get into the bus. Waited for another 15 minutes before it finally moved. It goes to view points – Outram, Tiong Bahru, Red Hill and finally Queenstown. It was already 5am by the time I reached home.
05.30am – had a hot shower, put my cloths to washing machine, and sleep until 2.30am the next day.

| The kind of late text message... The rain started at 3am! |
